Rome (Fides Service) - The first world day against the death
penalty will be held tomorrow November 30, organised by S. Egidio
Community in Rome with all the major NGOs working to eliminate
capital punishment all over the world. For the event activists
in 60 countries have organised the simultaneous illumination of
an important city building, in Rome the Colosseum. The cities
which have adhered include Barcelona, Brussels, Grenoble, Lyons,
Vienna. Copenhagen, Antwerp, Gand Bruges, Geneva, Dublin, Santiago
de Chile and New York. In the New York the City Hall will be illuminated
by the mayor. According to S. Egidio, an international campaign
against the death penalty, started in 1998, has collected some
4,487,895 signatures, and 111 countries where crime was punished
with execution, have suppressed capital punishment. The death
penalty still exists in 86 countries. See
