Vatican City (Fides Service) - "Authentic missionary activity
expresses itself in the evangelisation of cultures and in the
inculturation of the faith. <In the face of all the different
and at times contrasting cultures, present in the various parts
of the world, inculturation seeks to obey Christ's command to
preach the Gospel to all nations even to the ends of the earth.
Such obedience does not signify either syncretism or a simple
adaptation the Gospel message>" (Pastores dabo vobis 55).
Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Prefect of the Congregation for the
Evangelisation of Peoples and Grand Chancellor of Urban University
said this when he inaugurated a Convention entitled "From
Urban College to the Pontifical Urban University" on November
28 at Urban College in Rome. During its 375 years the Urban College
has "shown itself to be not only useful but also necessary
for the development of the Church's missionary activity in the
world. In fact the Church is born and lives for mission"
Cardinal Sepe said as he reflected on the role of the university
called to be a tangible and visible sign of the riches of the
different cultures and of their ability to share and exchange;
to foster integration of faith and life, culture and Gospel, as
well as the spiritual dimension of the person; to promote spirituality
of communion as a pedagogical and educational principle; to offer
every culture a project of Christian humanism testified by university
research. See
