Africa/Kenya - Disabled in a forgotten reality of Africa: a CUAMM project
Nairobi (Fides) - "The programme for rehabilitation of disabled persons is a local project supported by CUAMM with funds and the services of a physiotherapist" Paolo Chiodini project head for the Collegio Universitario Aspiranti e Medici Missionari (CUAMM) told Fides Service, with regard to a programme in Myahururu in Kenya. "Local parishes and St Martin Catholic Social Apostolate have been working among the disabled for some time. In Africa certain forms of disability are kept secret by the family, out of fear and superstition, while in other cases disabled persons are accepted by society but have no means of improving the quality of their life. Whereas with special assistance many are able to go to school and find a job. The aim of the project is not to assist the disabled at a special centre, but to care for them in their own home". (Fides Service 26/11/2002)
