Pacific Island Catholics celebrate Rosary Day in response to Pope
John Paul II's "Year of the Rosary" |
 |
| Tahiti (Fides Service) - Catholics from all over
the islands of Polynesia gathered recently in St Michel's parish
in Tahiti for a special Rosary Day. Garlands of flowers and traditional
singing and dancing, accompanied the Rosary procession through the
streets to the church for the recitation of the Rosary. Participants
included Rosary prayer-groups from the remotest islands in Polynesia.
"Our aim - said deacon Raymond Mai of Tahiti - is to live like
Mary, obedient to the will of God, open to welcome and serve our
neighbour, out of love". "We know that to follow Jesus
we must take up our cross and be light of the world and salt of
the earth wherever we are, at home, at work in the parish",
participants explained as the sun went down on the horizon and hearts
united in prayer, they sang fervently Ave Maria, Ave Maria! (Fides
Service 26/11/2002) |
