Jakarta (Fides Service) - Abortion, contrary to the faith and
morals of Muslims and Christians, may soon be legalised in Indonesia
if a recent move by the government-sanctioned National Family
Planning Association, upholding the abortion of a fetus less than
10 weeks old, is successful. Fides Service asked the opinion of
Jesuit Father Adolf Heuken SJ in Jakarta. The German-born moral
theologian, 73, on mission in Indonesia for 41 years, thinks that
the life of the unborn child can be saved if Muslims and Christians
in Indonesia take decisive joint action. He described the present
situation: "In Jakarta there are doctors and polyclinics
which perform abortion in great numbers, though it is officially
illegal. In a certain place some men or agents bring women to
doctors who do abortions. Some doctors make a lot of money because
it is illegal, but actually everybody can easily find a doctor
or nurse who does it. Police will not step in." Explaining
how he rallied pro-life Christians to seek counterparts, Fr Heuken
said: "I advised Perdhaki, the Catholic hospital organisation,
to make contact with Muslims who are against abortion to become
more powerful. Perdhaki established contact with Nahdlatul Ulama
and Mohammadiyah people. They agreed to join forces, but because
of the Bali bombing and so many Islamic extremists involved in
terror acts, they retreated for the moment. I hope the contact
with anti-abortion Muslim organisations can be re-established
after the terror-question has calmed down." PS (Fides Service
