Aachen (Fides Service) - "A Euro for Africa - a fund for
the future", is the slogan of a campaign organised by the
Pontifical Mission Societies in Germany, missio from 1 - 12 January
2003. The aim is to collect money in support of the activity of
the Catholic Church in Africa, particularly with regard to development,
justice and reconciliation and to eliminate "new forms of
slavery". The campaign takes its inspiration from a collection
organised over a hundred years ago, in 1891, by Pope Leo XIII.
To collect funds to promote the liberation of slaves and called
for a special day on 6 January of that year. "Our campaign
hopes to show that only by working together can we promote values
that support development necessary for a better future" says
Fr Hermann Schalück OFM National Director of the Pontifical
Mission Societies in Germany. "Only by investing in projects
aimed to eliminate the causes of today's new forms of slavery,
can be build a better future: the future of Africa is also our
future. We can only have justice and peace in Europe, if there
is justice and peace in Africa. Catholic missionary activity offers
a valuable contribution towards equal distribution of goods, access
to education, and religious instruction and formation." As
part of the campaign, which will be promoted in all 13,000 Catholic
parishes in Germany, there will be a Creativity Contest (Ideas)
for children, young people and adults. The winners of each category
will receive their award on 23 November 2003, World Day for the
Commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery. See www.afrikatag.de
