Rome (Fides Service) - From 19 - 21 November, Rome based Caritas
Internationalis has been holding the annual meeting of its Executive
Committee, the directing body of this Confederation of some 154
Catholic relief, development and social service organisations
working in over 200 countries. Among the various matters discussed,
particular importance was given to child care in emergency situations.
On the occasion of UN World Child Day, November 20, Fides Service
spoke with Fr Bryan Hehir of Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) which
operates on the national territory. "Child care is a particularly
important part of our work because the family is one of our priorities.
In our 156 centres all over the United States we offer counselling
for economic and psychological problems," says Fr Hehir.
"To give a practical example: where necessary we provide
food, economic subsidies and support to mothers with infants who
have to return to work." (Fides Service 21/11/2002)
