America/Paraguay - Bishops alarmed for moral and social crisis: "we must all work to build a better country"

Asuncion (Fides service) - "We must work to build a new country" is the cry coming from the Catholic Bishops of Paraguay after their plenary assembly in which the Bishops' Conference discussed the growing moral and economic crisis in political life and in administration of justice; the situation of social and economic injustice of the majority of the population. The Bishops denounce scandalous corruption, justice administered to suit personal interests, political interference in the administration of justice, unjust measures taken to heal the national deficit to the detriment of health care, education and other basic needs of society. Another cause of the serious crisis the Bishops say "is the superficiality of the media which publish totally unnecessary cruel and brutal details of events". The Bishops urge all media workers to remember that their duty is to "serve and form of the conscience of the people", and they underline that "the same duty falls to political authorities…and also to us bishops of the Catholic Church in Paraguay".
