Abidjan (Fides Service) - "This conflict is not about religions"
Father Blaise Amian secretary general of the Ivorian Catholic
Bishops Conference assured Fides Service. "When we were woken
up by shooting during the night 17-18 September, at first it was
said to be a mutiny, then a coup. That unsuccessful coup is now
an armed rebellion which has thrown into chaos the north and centre
of the country, ruining the economy and also paralysing the pastoral
activities of four diocese Odienne, Korhogo, Katiola and Bouake.
Some media, foreign in particular, spoke of north-south war, between
Muslims and Christians. This is totally false. If it were true,
the southern part of the country, home to 75% of the entire population
-Muslims, Christians and others - would also be involved. Facts
point to the opposite. This is neither a war between religions,
nor a war between north and south. All Ivories look are watching
confidently the peace talks in Lome, Togo, hoping the motives
and leaders of this conflict will be identified. Only then can
we see a return of peace, the sole condition for development.
