Oceania/Australia - Church assists asylum seekers while advocating better conditions

Sydney (Fides Service) - "The government does listen to the Churches in Australia, but this situation is very difficult", Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy, a member of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples and former president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, said this in a conversation with Fides Service (see complete interview). We contacted the Cardinal in Australia with regard to a Working Paper on the Humanitarian Program for People Seeking Asylum in Australia - an alternative policy on Asylum Seekers launched on 17 September by the President of the Australian Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes (ACLRI), Sr Bernadette Keating PBVM.
