Luanda (Fides Service) - During his visit to Angola, Cardinal
Crescenzio Sepe, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation
of Peoples, paid courtesy calls on both the President of the Republic
and the Speaker of Parliament. The Angolan President voiced to
the Cardinal his appreciation for the Church's work in promoting
reconciliation among the people. For his part, the Cardinal assured
the President that the Church intends to continue its efforts
to consolidate peace in the country. Before departing for Rome,
the Cardinal was taken to visit one of the many camps where thousands
of displaced persons still live. Inside this camp situated about
30 km from Luanda, the Church has built a school, a dispensary
and a children's feeding centre. Once peace is consolidated, with
international assistance Angola should find its way out of the
tunnel of hunger and desperation. (Fides Service 30/10/2002)
