Kinshasa (Fides Service) - In Democratic Congo fighting continues
despite a recent peace agreement. A mixed military commission
made up of representatives from Angola, Rwanda, South Africa,
Uganda and Zambia, says the Mai Mai militia threaten to destabilise
the Eastern region. The Mai Mai pro-government troops are fighting
various guerrilla groups allied with the armies of Rwanda and
Uganda, who invaded this part of Congo in 1998. Fides spoke to
local sources on the phone that said: "Continued fighting
is aggravating an already precarious situation. After four years
of war the people can take no more. We thought peace had come
but now we are on the brink of a humanitarian disaster and the
world media is indifferent. According to the UN World Food Programme
1.3 million people face starvation." At the root of the conflict,
the natural resources of the country, coltan, cobalt, diamonds
uranium and precious timber. On October 16 the UN Security Council
issued a report denouncing trafficking of these resources. A local
sources comments: This is good, but we want to see the next move.
Sanctions must be imposed on the companies which back the war
in this tormented nation". It is time to take concrete steps
for Congo, as it was said in an appeal issued by Missionaries
published by Fides this week. We ask "Where do we draw the
line between indifference and complicity? (Fides Service 26/10/2002)
