Africa/Ivory Coast - Despite sporadic shooting cease-fire holds

Abidjan (Fides Service) - The cease-fire signed recently holds, but there is confusion and still some fighting. A local source in M'Bahiakro, contacted by Fides service says that the rebels have made Bouake their capital. Villages near M'Bahiakro have been attacked and are now in the hands of rebels who have not stated clearly their demands, except for the resignation of president and government. It is thought that they want more autonomy for the northern regions. In fact the Dioula people who live in the north support the rebellion. The only people left in Bouake, which used to have a population of one million, are Dioula. This is a humanitarian tragedy." (Fides Service 26/10/2002)
