Dear Brothers and Sisters!
1. With gratitude for your invitation, I have returned after six years to Bosnia-Hercegovina. I give thanks to God for allowing me once again to meet peoples who have always been so close to my heart.
I thank the Honourable Members of the Presidency of Bosnia-Hercegovina, for their cordial greeting and for all that they, together with the other Authorities, have done to make my visit possible.
I greet my dear brother, the Most Reverend Franjo Komarica, the Bishop of Banja Luka, together with the other Bishops and all the faithful of the Catholic Church. I greet our brothers and sisters of the Serbian Orthodox Church and of the other Ecclesial Communities, and the followers of Islam and Judaism.
2. Knowing that I am entering your homes through radio and television, I greet and embrace all of you, dear people living in the different parts of Bosnia-Hercegovina. I know the long ordeal which you have endured, the burden of suffering which is daily a part of your lives, the temptations to discouragement and resignation which you experience. I stand beside you in asking the international community, which already has done so much, to continue to be close to you and to help you to reach quickly a situation of full security in justice and harmony.
You yourselves must be the primary builders of your future! The tenacity of your character and the rich human, cultural and religious traditions which distinguish you are your true wealth. Do not give up! Certainly starting afresh is not easy. It requires sacrifice and steadfastness; it requires knowing how to sow seeds and then to wait patiently. But you know that starting afresh is nevertheless possible. Trust in God's help, and trust too in human initiative.
3. If society is to take on a truly human face and everyone is to look to the future with confidence, it is necessary to rebuild man from within, healing wounds and achieving a genuine purification of memory through mutual forgiveness. The root of every good and, sadly, of every evil is in the depths of the heart (cf. Mk 7:21-23). It is there that change must occur, making it possible to renew the fabric of society and to establish human relationships which favour cooperation between the vital forces present in the country.
In this regard, a grave responsibility belongs to those who, by the will of the electorate, democratically govern the nation: may they not renounce this indispensable task because of present difficulties, nor should they let themselves be pressured by partisan interests.
The Catholic Church seeks to make her own contribution to this common undertaking through the practical involvement of her sons and daughters, particularly through her various initiatives in the areas of education, aid and human development, in the free exercise of her specific mission.
4. Shortly, during the celebration of Holy Mass, I will have the joy of enrolling among the Blessed the young Ivan Merz, born here in Banja Luka, an illustrious example of Christian life and apostolic commitment.
By his prayers may he confirm the hopes and good wishes which the Pope today expresses for Bosnia-Hercegovina, so that present problems will find a positive solution, and that the country will see realized its aspiration to become part of united Europe in a context of prosperity, freedom and peace.

Cari Fratelli e Sorelle!
1. Con animo riconoscente per l'invito ricevuto, faccio ritorno dopo sei anni in Bosnia ed Erzegovina e rendo grazie a Dio per avermi concesso di incontrare nuovamente popolazioni da sempre tanto care al mio cuore.
Ringrazio i Signori Membri della Presidenza della Bosnia ed Erzegovina per il cordiale saluto che mi hanno rivolto e per quanto, insieme con le altre Autorità, hanno fatto per rendere possibile la mia visita.
Saluto il caro fratello Mons. Franjo Komarica, Vescovo di Banja Luka, insieme con gli altri Membri di questo Episcopato ed i fedeli tutti della Chiesa Cattolica. Saluto pure i Fratelli e le Sorelle della Chiesa Ortodossa Serba e delle altre Comunità ecclesiali, come anche i fedeli del Giudaismo e dell'Islam.
2. Sapendo che, mediante la radio e la televisione, mi è dato di entrare nelle vostre case, saluto ed abbraccio tutti voi, cari abitanti delle diverse parti della Bosnia ed Erzegovina. Conosco la lunga prova che avete vissuto, il peso di sofferenza che accompagna quotidianamente la vostra vita, la tentazione dello scoraggiamento e della rassegnazione che vi insidia. Mi pongo al vostro fianco per chiedere alla Comunità internazionale, che tanto ha già fatto, di continuare ad esservi accanto per consentirvi di giungere presto ad una situazione di piena sicurezza nella giustizia e nella concordia.
Siate voi stessi i primi costruttori del vostro futuro! La tenacia del vostro carattere, le ricche tradizioni umane, culturali e religiose che vi distinguono sono la vostra vera ricchezza. Non vi rassegnate! Certo, la ripresa non è facile. Richiede sacrificio e costanza, richiede l'arte del seminare e la pazienza dell'aspettare. Ma voi sapete che la ripresa è comunque possibile. Abbiate fiducia nell'aiuto di Dio e abbiate anche fiducia nell'intraprendenza dell'uomo.
3. Perché la società assuma un volto autenticamente umano e tutti possano affrontare il futuro con fiducia, è necessario rifare l'uomo dal di dentro, curando le ferite e operando un'autentica purificazione della memoria mediante il reciproco perdono. E' nel profondo del cuore la radice di ogni bene e, purtroppo, di ogni male (cfr Mc 7,21-23). E' là che deve avvenire il cambiamento, grazie al quale sarà possibile rinnovare il tessuto sociale e instaurare rapporti umani aperti alla collaborazione tra le forze vive del Paese.
Grave responsabilità, a questo proposito, spetta a quanti, per volontà degli elettori, esercitano democraticamente il governo: non desistano per le difficoltà del momento da un'opera così indispensabile, né si lascino sopraffare da interessi di parte.
All'impresa comune la Chiesa Cattolica intende apportare il proprio contributo mediante l'impegno fattivo dei suoi figli, in particolare mediante le diverse iniziative di educazione, assistenza e promozione umana che le sono proprie, nel libero esercizio della sua specifica missione.
4. Fra poco, durante la celebrazione della Santa Messa, avrò la gioia di ascrivere all'albo dei Beati il giovane Ivan Merz, nato proprio qui a Banja Luka, esempio luminoso di vita cristiana e di impegno apostolico.
Con la sua preghiera voglia egli avvalorare l'augurio del Papa per la Bosnia ed Erzegovina; possano i problemi esistenti trovare felice soluzione, e il Paese veda accolta positivamente la sua aspirazione di far parte dell'Europa unita in un contesto di prosperità, di libertà e di pace.

Al termine della cerimonia di benvenuto, in una sala dell'aeroporto di Banja Luka, il Papa si incontra in privato con i tre Membri della Presidenza Collegiale della Bosnia ed Erzegovina: il Sig. Borislav Paravac, serbo, Presidente di turno della Presidenza, il Sig. Dragan Covic, croato, e il Sig. Sulejman Tíhic, musulmano.

Lasciato l'aeroporto internazionale, il Santo Padre Giovanni Paolo II si reca in auto al Convento della SS.ma Trinità di Banja Luka dove, nello spazio antistante, ha luogo la Santa Messa nel corso della quale il Papa proclama Beato il Servo di Dio Ivan Merz (1896-1928). Sono presenti alla Celebrazione Eucaristica i Membri della Presidenza Collegiale della Bosnia ed Erzegovina, il Presidente della Repubblica Serba e i Vescovi della Bosnia ed Erzegovina. Presenti inoltre i Rappresentanti della Chiesa Ortodossa, degli Ebrei e dell'Islam.
Nel corso del Sacro Rito, introdotto dall'indirizzo di omaggio del Vescovo di Banja Luka, S.E. Mons. Franjo Komarica, e dopo la proclamazione del Santo Vangelo, il Papa pronuncia l'omelia che riportiamo di seguito:

1. "You are the light of the world". Jesus today repeats these words for us, dear brothers and sisters, for our liturgical assembly. They are not simply a moral exhortation. They are a statement of fact which expresses an essential requirement flowing from the reception of Baptism.
By virtue of this sacrament human beings become members of the Mystical Body of Christ (cf. Rom 6:3-5). The Apostle Paul states: "As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Gal 3:27). Saint Augustine rightly exclaimed: "Let us rejoice and give thanks: we have become not only Christians but Christ himself… Marvel and rejoice, for we have become Christ" (In Ioann. Evang. Tract. 21:8, CCL 36:216).
Christ is "the true light that enlightens every man" (Jn 1:9). Christians for their part are called to become a reflection of this Light by following and imitating Jesus. For this reason they will listen to and meditate on Christ's word, take conscious and active part in the Church's liturgical and sacramental life, and carry out the commandment of love by serving their brothers and sisters, especially the helpless, the poor and the suffering.
2. I greet with affection the Bishop of Banja Luka and President of the Episcopal Conference, the Most Reverend Franjo Komarica, and I thank him for his cordial words of greeting at the beginning of this Eucharistic celebration. My respectful greeting also goes to the other Bishops of Bosnia-Hercegovina, and in particular to Cardinal Vinko Pulijc, the Archbishop of Vhrbosna and a native of this Diocese, and to the other Cardinals and Bishops who join us. I greet in the Lord all the pilgrims who have gathered here from different parts of this country and from neighbouring nations.
I send a fraternal greeting to His Beatitude Patriarch Pavle and the Members of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The new vitality recently gained in our journey towards mutual understanding, reciprocal respect and fraternal solidarity is a cause for joy and hope for this region.
My greetings go also to the members of the other Ecclesial Communities of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and to the members of the Jewish community and the Islamic community.
I greet the Honourable Members of the Presidency of Bosnia-Hercegovina and all the other civil and military Authorities. I very much appreciate your presence and I thank you for all that you have contributed to the organization of my visit to your country.
Finally to you, the beloved sons and daughters of this pilgrim Church in Bosnia-Hercegovina, I open wide my arms in order to embrace you and tell you that you have an important place in the Pope's heart. He constantly brings before the Lord in prayer the sufferings which still burden your journey and he shares with you in hope the expectation of better days.
From this city, marked in the course of history by so much suffering and bloodshed, I ask Almighty God to have mercy on the sins committed against humanity, human dignity and freedom also by children of the Catholic Church, and to foster in all the desire for mutual forgiveness. Only in a climate of true reconciliation will the memory of so many innocent victims and their sacrifice not be in vain, but encourage everyone to build new relationships of fraternity and understanding.
3. Dear brothers and sisters, the just man, surrounded by divine light, becomes in turn a lamp which radiates light and gives warmth. This is what we learn today from the figure of Ivan Merz.
A gifted young man, he made a good return on his rich natural talents and obtained great human success: it can be said that he had a very successful life. But that is not the reason why he is today declared Blessed. What makes him one of the choir of the Beati is his success in God's eyes. The great aspiration of his whole life was "never to forget God, to desire always to be one with him". In all his activities Ivan Merz sought "the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus" and he allowed Christ to make him his own (cf. Phil 3:8,12).
4. At the school of the liturgy, the source and summit of the Church's life (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10), Ivan Merz grew to the fullness of Christian maturity and became one of the principal promotors of the liturgical renewal in his country.
Taking part in Mass and drawing nourishment from the Body of Christ and the Word of God, he drew the inspiration to become an apostle of young people. It was not by chance that he chose as his motto "Sacrifice - Eucharist - Apostolate". Conscious of the vocation he had received in Baptism, he made his whole life a "race" towards holiness, the "high standard" of Christian life (cf. Novo Millennio Ineunte, 31). For this reason, as the First Reading says, "his memory will not disappear, and his name will live through all generations" (Sir 39:9).
5. The name of Ivan Merz has meant in the past a programme of life and of activity for an entire generation of young Catholics. Today too it must do the same! Your country and your Church, dear young people, have experienced difficult times and now there is a need to work together so that life on all levels will fully return to normal. I therefore appeal to each of you; I invite you not to step back, not to yield to the temptation to become discouraged, but to multiply initiatives which will make Bosnia-Hercegovina once more a land of reconciliation, encounter and peace.
The future of this land depends also on you! Do not seek a more comfortable life elsewhere, do not flee from your responsibilities and expect others to resolve problems, but resolutely counter evil with the power of good.
Like Blessed Ivan, strive for a personal encounter with Christ which sheds new light on life. May the Gospel be the great ideal guiding your approaches and your decisions! Thus you will become missionaries in word and deed, signs of God's love and credible witnesses of the merciful presence of Christ. Never forget: "one does not light a lamp and put it under a bushel" (cf. Mt 5:15).
6. Dear brothers and sisters who take part with such fervour in this celebration, may the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, keep your heart and your spirit in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ!
This is the prayer and the wish which, through the intercession of Blessed Ivan Merz, the Pope today offers for you and for all the peoples of Bosnia-Hercegovina.

1. "Voi siete la luce del mondo". Questa affermazione, carissimi Fratelli e Sorelle, Gesù la ripete oggi per noi, nella nostra assemblea liturgica. Non è una semplice esortazione morale. E' una constatazione, che esprime un'insopprimibile esigenza derivante dal Battesimo ricevuto.
In virtù di questo Sacramento, infatti, l'essere umano è inserito nel Corpo mistico di Cristo (cfr Rm 6,3-5). L'apostolo Paolo afferma: "Quanti siete stati battezzati in Cristo vi siete rivestiti di Cristo" (Gal 3,27). Giustamente pertanto Agostino esclamava: "Rallegriamoci e ringraziamo: siamo diventati non solo cristiani, ma Cristo... Stupite e gioite: Cristo siamo diventati" (In Ioann. Evang. tract., 21, 8: CCL 36, 216).
Ma Cristo è "la luce vera, quella che illumina ogni uomo" (Gv 1,9). Il cristiano perciò è chiamato a diventare a sua volta riflesso di questa Luce, seguendo e imitando Gesù. Per questo egli ascolterà e mediterà la sua parola, parteciperà in modo consapevole e attivo alla vita liturgica e sacramentale della Chiesa, praticherà il comandamento dell'amore servendo i fratelli, specialmente se piccoli, poveri e sofferenti.
2. Saluto con affetto il Vescovo di Banja Luka e Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale, Mons. Franjo Komarica, e lo ringrazio per le cordiali parole che mi ha rivolto all'inizio di questa Celebrazione eucaristica. Il mio deferente pensiero va, poi, agli altri Vescovi della Bosnia ed Erzegovina, in particolare al Signor Cardinale Vinko Pulijc, Arcivescovo di Vrhbosna e originario di questa diocesi, ed agli altri Cardinali e Vescovi che ci accompagnano. Un saluto nel Signore a tutti i pellegrini qui convenuti dalle diverse parti del Paese e dalle Nazioni vicine.
Un fraterno saluto invio a Sua Beatitudine il Patriarca Pavle e ai Membri del Santo Sinodo della Chiesa Ortodossa serba. Il nuovo vigore che, in tempi recenti, ha acquistato il nostro cammino verso la mutua comprensione, il reciproco rispetto e la fraterna solidarietà sono motivo di gioia e di speranza per questa regione.
Il mio pensiero si rivolge anche ai fedeli delle altre Comunità ecclesiali di Bosnia ed Erzegovina, come pure ai fedeli della Comunità ebraica e della Comunità islamica.
Saluto i Signori Membri della Presidenza della Bosnia ed Erzegovina e tutte le altre Autorità civili e militari. Apprezzo molto la vostra presenza e vi ringrazio per quanto avete fatto per l'organizzazione di questa mia visita alla vostra Terra.
E quindi a voi, amati figli di questa Chiesa pellegrina in Bosnia ed Erzegovina, spalanco le mie braccia per accogliervi e dirvi che occupate un posto importante nel cuore del Papa. Egli porta costantemente nella preghiera davanti al Signore la sofferenza che ancora rende pesante il vostro cammino e condivide con voi nella speranza l'attesa di giorni migliori.
Da questa città, segnata nel corso della storia da tanta sofferenza e tanto sangue, imploro il Signore Onnipotente affinché abbia misericordia per le colpe commesse contro l'uomo, la sua dignità e la sua libertà anche da figli della Chiesa cattolica e infonda in tutti il desiderio del reciproco perdono. Soltanto in un clima di vera riconciliazione, la memoria di tante vittime innocenti e il loro sacrificio non saranno vani, ci incoraggeranno a costruire rapporti nuovi di fraternità e di comprensione.
3. Carissimi Fratelli e Sorelle, il giusto, inondato dalla luce divina, diventa a sua volta fiaccola che risplende e riscalda. E' quanto ci insegna oggi la figura del nuovo Beato Ivan Merz.
Giovane brillante, seppe moltiplicare i ricchi talenti naturali di cui era dotato ed ottenne numerosi successi umani: si può parlare della sua come di una vita ben riuscita. Ma la ragione per cui egli viene oggi ascritto all'albo dei Beati non è quella. Ciò che lo introduce nel coro dei Beati è il suo successo davanti a Dio. La grande aspirazione di tutta la sua vita, infatti, è stata quella di "mai dimenticare Dio, desiderare sempre di unirsi a Lui". In ogni sua attività, egli ricercò "la sublimità della conoscenza di Cristo Gesù" e si lasciò "conquistare" da Lui (cfr Fil 3,8.12).
4. Alla scuola della liturgia, fonte e culmine della vita della Chiesa (cfr Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10), Ivan Merz crebbe fino alla pienezza della maturità cristiana e divenne uno dei promotori del rinnovamento liturgico nella sua Patria.
Partecipando alla Messa, nutrendosi del Corpo di Cristo e della Parola di Dio, egli trasse la spinta a farsi apostolo dei giovani. Non a caso scelse come il motto "Sacrificio - Eucaristia - Apostolato". Cosciente della vocazione ricevuta nel Battesimo, fece della sua esistenza una corsa verso la santità, "misura alta" della vita cristiana (cfr Novo millennio ineunte, 31). Per questo, come afferma la prima lettura, "non scomparirà il suo ricordo, il suo nome vivrà di generazione in generazione" (Sir 39,9).
5. Il nome di Ivan Merz ha significato un programma di vita e di azione per tutta una generazione di giovani cattolici. Deve continuare ad esserlo anche oggi! La vostra Patria e la vostra Chiesa, carissimi giovani, hanno vissuto momenti difficili ed ora occorre lavorare perché la vita riprenda pienamente ad ogni livello. Mi rivolgo, pertanto, a ciascuno di voi, invitandovi a non tirarvi indietro, a non cedere alla tentazione dello scoraggiamento, ma a moltiplicare le iniziative perché la Bosnia ed Erzegovina torni ad essere terra di riconciliazione, di incontro e di pace.
Il futuro di queste contrade dipende anche da voi! Non cercate altrove una vita più comoda, non fuggite le vostre responsabilità aspettando che altri risolvano i problemi, ma ponete risolutamente rimedio al male con la forza del bene.
Come il Beato Ivan, ricercate l'incontro personale con Cristo che illumina di luce nuova la vita. Il Vangelo sia il grande criterio che guida i vostri orientamenti e le vostre scelte! Diventerete così missionari con i gesti e le parole e sarete segni dell'amore di Dio, testimoni credibili della presenza misericordiosa di Cristo. Non dimenticate: "Non si accende una lucerna per metterla sotto il moggio" (Mt 5,15).
6. Cari Fratelli e Sorelle che partecipate con tanto fervore a questa Celebrazione, la pace di Dio Padre, che sorpassa ogni sentimento, custodisca il vostro cuore e il vostro spirito nella conoscenza e nell'amore di Dio e del suo Figlio, il Signore nostro Gesù Cristo!
E' la preghiera e l'augurio che, per intercessione del Beato Ivan Merz, il Papa eleva oggi per voi e per tutti i Popoli della Bosnia ed Erzegovina.
