Born in Wadowice (Krakow), Poland. His father, Karol Wojtyla,
(son of master tailor Maciej and his wife Anna) was born July
18, 1879 at Lipnik near the city of Bielsko Biala, Poland. In
1900 he was an administrative officer in the Austrian Army, then
Lieutenant in the Polish Army until his retirement in 1927. His
mother, Emilia Kaczorowska, (daughter of packsaddle maker Feliks
and his wife Anna) was born on March 26,1884 in Krakow, Poland.
His brother, Edmund, was born on August 27, 1906 in Krakow. He
was a physician, who worked in Prowszechny Hospital in Bielsko

Began to attend the elementary school for boys and later the preparatory
school, "Marcin Wadowita" where he achieved the highest

His mother dies as a result of a renal infection. To her he dedicated
one of his poems.

Wadowita" where he demonstrated a predisposition for foreign
languages and poetry.

In this period, he performs in his first student theatricals
at Wadowice, begins to study of Greek, is elected president of
the Sodality of Mary, and makes his first pilgrimage to Czestochowa.

Meets Jan Tryanowski, tailor, a man of profound spirituality
shaped by the Carmelite School. Is introduced to the writings
of John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila. In this period he participates
in the underground theatre directed by Tadeusz Kudlinski.

Finds work as a stone cutter in the quarry at Zakrzowek, Krakow,
connected with the Solvay chemical plant, thereby evading deportation
to Germany and forced labor in the Third Reich.
