| “We
will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the definition
of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception with enthusiasm
and joy of a dream come true because Mexico like Spain,
of which it was a part for three centuries as New Spain,
has always been deeply devoted to Immaculate Mary and
has always worked and prayed for its dogmatic definition.
The image miraculously imprinted on the cloak of Saint
Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on 12 December 1531, was
immediately and unanimously recognised by Spanish piety
as a representation of the Immaculate Conception.
“Immaculate Mary of Mexico”, as she was
recognised by Spain, was always dear to Spanish piety
and She herself took the name of Guadalupe. However
the time, circumstances and form of her apparition was
immediately recognised by also native Mexicans as the
Mother of God and all peoples. The event in Guadalupe
made what was humanly impossible, possible: two peoples
were reconciled and a Church and a united nation were
born. Pope John Paul II said this was a “perfect
example of inculturised evangelisation”.
Daily masses are well attended at our Shrine particularly
as the feast day 12 December approaches. December 8
will be an unforgettable day because we will celebrate
the 50th anniversary of Ordination for the members of
our Chapter, ordained priests on the 100th anniversary
of the definition of the dogma on the Immaculate Conception.
Celebrations will start with solemn Vespers on Tuesday
evening. On Wednesday Morning Prayer will be followed
by a solemn Mass of thanksgiving for the priestly Jubilees.
In the afternoon the three seminaries in the archdiocese
will render homage to Most Holy Mary and thanks to the
Lord for the definition of her Immaculate Conception”.
