14.718 cases of Aids: summary by Doctor Doris Portocarrero, Directress of the National Initiative for Children’s Rights Group

Lima (Fides Service) – According to a recent government report sent to the Committee for Children’s Rights, cases of HIV/AIDS among young people are caused mainly by sexual activity. The ratio of AIDS patients man woman is three 3 men to 1 woman. Mother/child transmission is spreading and so is the number of woman infected. In December 1999 in Peru there were 4,500 minors under 15 with HIV/AIDS. According to the NGO Vía Libre in Peru there are about 100,000 HIV+ persons. And those with AIDS are 14,718, many of whom receive no treatment.
