HIV/AIDS
VVery serious is the situation of AIDS orphans 11
million in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. In Zambia 75% of the new teachers
appointed are to replace those infected by HIV/AIDS. In Malawi AIDS
among teachers is so widespread that in some schools teachers have as
many as 96 pupils in a class.
In 2001 more than 250,000 children under 14 lost their parents to HIV/AIDS: Nigeria 995.000; Ethiopia 989.000; .D. Congo 927.000; Kenya 892.000; Uganda 884.000; Tanzania 815.000; Zimbabwe 782.000. In 2003 AIDS killed 3 million people: 2.5 million adults and 500 000 children under 15. Every day there 6.000 more young people are infected by HIV. In Sub-Saharan Africa 25.0 – 28.2 million adults and children infected; 3.0 – 3.4 million new cases of infection adults and children; 2.2 – 2.4 million deaths of adults and children. In North Africa and the Middle East 470 000 –

new cases of infection adults and children; 35 000 – 50 000
deaths of adults and children. West Asia and the Pacific 700 000 – 1.3 million adults and children infected; 150 000 – 270 000 new cases of infection adults and children; 32 000 – 58 000 deaths of adults and children. In Latin America 1.3 – 1.9 million adults and children infected; 120 000 – 180 000 new cases of infection adults and children; 49 000 – 70 000 deaths of adults and children. Caribbean 350 000 – 590 000 adults and children infected; 45 000 – 80 000 new cases of infection adults and children;30 000 – 50 000 deaths of adults and children. Eastern Europe and Central Asia 1.2 – 1.8 million adults and children infected; 180 000 – 280 000 new cases of infection adults and children; 23 000 – 37 000 deaths of adults and children. Western Europe 520 000 – 680 000 adults and children infected; 30 000 – 40 000 new cases of infection adults and children; 2 600 – 3 400 deaths of adults and children. North America 790 000 – 1.2 million adults and children infected; 36 000 – 54 000 new cases of infection adults and children; 12 000 – 18 000 deaths of adults and children. Australia and New Zealand 12 000 – 18 000 di adults and children infected; 700 – 1 000 new cases of infection adults and children ; 100 deaths of adults and children.
