AMERICA/PERU “Solidarity with children
living in the streets”: Archdiocese of Huancayo makes solemn
Lenten commitment
Huancayo (Fides Service) – Responding to the
Pope’s call to help suffering children during Lent this year,
the Archdiocese of Huancayo, in Peru has organised a series of activities
to promote initiatives of solidarity to help children living in
the streets. The first stage consisted in investigating the different
districts of the town to draw up a map showing where and how these
children live. After this a Protection Plan will be elaborated on
the basis of investigation’s findings. Local and regional
civil authorities have adhered to the Church’s initiative.
According to the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference “in this
region there are as many as 5,000 children totally abandoned. These
minors live in the streets, many work in inhuman conditions, many
are exploited and many a slaves of prostitution”. (R.Z.) (Agenzia
