Biographical note: Cardinal Julius Riyadi Darmaatmadja SJ, was born in Muntilan, archdiocese of Semarang, 20 December 1934. He was ordained a priest on 18 December 1969. Appointed Bishop of Semarang on 19 February 1983, he was ordained a bishop on 29 June 1983 and later in 1994 on 26 November Pope John Paul II created him a Cardinal.
