The international Eucharistic Congresses

A short historical account

The Congresses took their origin in the last century from a fervent Eucharistic devotion that challenged the ignorance and religious indifference regarding the central Mystery of the Church: the Eucharist.
They developed in harmonious cooperation between laity and clergy.
"The salvation of society through the Eucharist" was from the first the motto of the Congresses.
With the second Vatican Council the Eucharistic Congresses took on a new image, reflected in the expression "Statio Orbis": the gathering of the particular Churches in a city, with the Pope or his Legate, around Christ, present in his Eucharistic Mystery, whose meaning is to be made manifest.
Ritual, 1973: "Communion and Eucharistic worship outside Mass", nn. 109-112).
The Eucharistic Celebration, with the other expressions of Eucharistic worship (adoration and procession) is the centre and summit of the study sessions and various manifestations.
The International Eucharistic Congresses manifest in this way the faith in the Eucharistic Mystery. They express also the communion of the universal Church, a Church that experiences its solidarity with the modern world, faced with such fundamental problems as those of sharing and justice, of the sanctity of the family, respect for every creature and world peace.
The Eucharistic Congresses have had and have an important role in making better known and giving practical expression to the centrality of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church in our day.
