ASIA/KOREA - SCANDALS SHAKE SOUTH KOREA PRESIDENCY: ROH ANNOUNCES REFERENDUM ON HIS GOVERNMENT

Seoul (Fides Service) - South Korea's President Roh Moo-hyun has proposed a national referendum on his rule in mid-December after admitting he had lost confidence in his ability to govern. In office for only eight months, the president has seen his popularity plummet as financial scandals and economic recession left him open to political and press attacks.
The decision was communicated by Parliament. Recently the President has been caught in a tempest of corruption involving his closes collaborators. President Roh has always affirmed his personal integrity and transparency of action. This is why he has called for a referendum on his rule to put an end to a difficult political moment for his majority with serious repercussions on Korea’s economy.
