AFRICA/ANGOLA - HIV AND TRANSFUSION SECURITY: CONFERENCE IN LUANDA

Friday, 25 July 2003

Rome (Fides Service) – According to a press statement issued by the Coalition for HIV Positive People, control of blood quality is still a serious problem in Angola where only 30 percent of the donations are tested. To address this situation on 31 July in the northern Angolan province of Cabinda there will be an HIV/AIDS safe-blood conference with the objective of reducing infections caused by sexually transmitted diseases. The participants will discuss topics such as national health plans and safe blood, participation of all who are ready to guarantee availability of safe blood, and bio-security in transfusion. At the end of the conference the acts will be sent to the government for information. Infected blood is the cause of a good number of the cases of AIDS registered in Angola.
