Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - Four years after the disaster that devastated Haiti, and caused about 300 000 deaths (see Fides 10/01/2014), the NGO AVSI continues its commitment towards 'the reconstruction of the human' in the island. Many things have changed, but many challenges remain to be addressed. Currently, there are 170 thousand displaced people, 600 thousand Haitians living in food insecurity and more than 50 000 new infections of cholera are recorded every year. All this in a context of strong economic degrowth: development indicators in the Country remain low, some even negative, the population live mostly in unacceptable conditions of poverty and rights, even the most basic needs are not guaranteed. In recent years, AVSI has launched 19 new works: seven schools, two education centers, 6 nutritional centers, three workshops and a community restaurant; 1 aqueduct to provide water to 10 million people, 10 active nutritional centers, 4 in Port -au -Prince and 6 in Les Cayes, in favor of about 15 000 children (under 5 years of age) and pregnant women. 1,500 children received education in about 100 schools and also personalized support; 40 000 children received school kits (notebooks, books, backpacks); 9000 farmers receive training, technical assistance and equipment/seeds. The number of homeless people has fallen by 90%. The Haitians have learned to cultivate the land and work, the rebuilt schools work and the children have gone back to school.
