Marrere (Agenzia Fides) - The General Hospital of Marrere assists a population of approximately 300 thousand inhabitants, especially people living in the slums of the big city of Nampula, 14 km away from the hospital. During the long civil war the hospital was in a state of semi-abandonment and, only in 2005, it started to work thanks to a co-management agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Archdiocese of Nampula. It is the only hospital in the area that accepts the people with HIV-AIDS entrusted to the Comboni Missionaries.
Particular attention is paid to women and children living with HIV. In addition to medical care the sisters provide nutrition education programs and the distribution of local enriched foods. For mothers nutrition education meetings are organized, held by a nutritionist who teaches which foods are more nutritious for children at different stages of growth. To ensure medical care for the population that is unable to reach the hospital, a program of home visits has been launched. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 07/01/2014)
