Ranchi (Agenzia Fides) – Human trafficking, mainly women and girls, is one of the most serious violations of human dignity and human rights. Alarmed by the increase in cases of trafficking and exploitation of tribal girls, the social services of the Diocese of Ranchi, in Jharkhand, northeastern state of India, have initiated a program aimed at protecting health, economic and social integration of the most vulnerable individuals.
The phenomenon is widespread and is aggravated by high rates of poverty, vulnerability and lack of culture. It is an unstoppable "trade". Forced marriage, very often, is one of the facades behind which hides this kind of traffic that sees sexual exploitation, labor and sale of organs. The project covers 30 villages in the district of Bero, 35 km west of Ranchi. The diocese, with the collaboration of the Catholic NGO Manos Unidas, aims to educate and make girls and women more aware about their rights and dignity of people. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 27/08/2013)
