AFRICA/SUDAN - Humanitarian emergency in Kalma refugee camp in South Darfur

Monday, 22 July 2013

Nyala (Agenzia Fides) - Torrential rains continue to inflict serious damage in the southern part of Darfur. A hundred homes in the Kalma refugee camp, near the city of Nyala, have been completely destroyed. As reported by the local Radio Dabanga, residents continue to live in the open without any possibility of shelter from the rains. All kinds of help, from tents to tarpaulins are urgently needed. The situation is particularly dramatic for children. Recently, 28 families have reached El Salam camp, near Nyala, after having escaped the clashes between the Gimr and Beni Halba tribes. We are talking about a hundred people who are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance to try to survive the tragic conditions in which they find themselves. According to local sources, security at the camp continues to deteriorate due to repeated attacks, banditry and robbery against displaced persons by pro-government militiamen. The two tribes - Gimr and Beni Halba have been in conflict since February. Disputes started because of land properties in South Darfur. Subsequently, both sides have accused each other of violating previous peace accords, signed and broken for a short period. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 22/07/2013)
