AFRICA - Abortifacient drugs and contraceptives: a false and dangerous solution to poverty

Saturday, 21 July 2012

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – Flooding the developing world with contraceptives and abortifacient drugs to reduce population growth, is not the key to reducing poverty. It is a false and dangerous solution, promoted by organizations such as the "Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation." In addition, leading African women to taking drugs constantly, weakens their health. Every answer to poverty must take into consideration the full respect for the dignity of poor people and not to eliminate them. This is what is said by 'The Catholic organization "Human Life International" in a note sent to Fides Agency, stigmatizing broadcast programming, launched by the Gates Foundation, of a new injectable contraceptive that would be analogous to the currently available DMPA (Depo- Provera). Unlike Depo Provera, which is administered by a medical professional, this new form is a self-administered subcutaneous injection. The Gates Foundation intends to offer it to more than 120 million women around the world, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. "What they do not say - HLI notes - is that this 'solution' will result in the death of newly conceived children, it may double the transmission rate of HIV and increase the risk of breast cancer. In addition, progestin-only contraceptives are associated with a significant risk for blood clots and stroke, all of which significantly impair the health of women."
The family planning proposed by organizations such as Planned Parenthood, according to Malthusian principles, strongly urges the Afro-American communities to limit their growth, as the only way to address poverty, it says .. "But a key factor – notes HLI - is education: women are empowered when they are educated. Men and women need education and culture to contribute to public debate and the formulation of social policies ". "Motherhood – it continues - must be considered a valuable vocation and not a drain on society. Only then can the real roots of poverty be addressed," concludes HLI.
The Gates Foundation and its partners have launched a 4 billion dollar campaign for birth control in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Human Life International, it is a pro-life movement with projects in over 80 countries worldwide. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 21/7/2012)
