AMERICA/HONDURAS - Caritas Campaign against violence, to respect the dignity and human rights

Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - The campaign launched by Caritas at a national level, intends to recover in Honduras those deep Christian values such as respect for human dignity and human rights, tolerance, solidarity and the common good. This effort requires an approach to reality by feeling the pain, suffering and anguish of others, especially the poor and those who suffer in first person because of violence.
The campaign, officially launched on February 3, aims to help create a climate of respect for life and human dignity, so trampled on in the country, starting with groups, communities, the parishes and dioceses. Throughout the territory of Honduras there are many acts of violence, and this situation has a negative impact on personal, family, community and social life. It also affects the economy, disrupts the public peace, sows distrust, damages the social fabric, increases resentment, fear, anxiety and desire totake the law into one’s own hands.
The Honduran Catholic weekly "Fides" keeps trying to stir the consciences by offering comprehensive information and a Christian spirit, before the violent reality that the country lives. So the campaign of Caritas in these words suggests: "In this period of Lent, when the liturgy calls us to follow Christ and to learn from Him his deep compassion for human suffering, his closeness to the poor, the dispossessed and the excluded we must work resolutely to change our environment, our surroundings. Let’s begin with small gestures, behaviors and attitudes but significant. Christians know that violence begets violence, so it is important to learn to see our brothers as children of God and not as enemies. We strongly condemn the sin but not the sinner. Finding deep solutions is not always easy, but it ensures a harmonious coexistence. Let us remember that repression can temporarily put under control violence, but does not reach its roots".
The Catholic weekly Fides, founded in 1956 by Father Jose Alfonso Molina, began as a 4-page newsletter for the faithful in an area of the capital of Honduras. In 1962 it became a weekly, written by journalists, and begins to have a big public firstly in society in the country and then in Central America. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 12/03/2012)
