Friday, 30 April 2004

Rome (Fides Service) - According to the Rome based United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO, about half the 40 million poor people in Latin America and the Caribbean are subsistence farmers of whom 26 million (33%) are Indigenous people and 16% are farmers without land.
Delegates from 33 countries are meeting in Guatemala, for the 28th Conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation FAO, to identify new ways to render agriculture more competitive and eliminate food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Guatemala’s minister of agriculture said the target of the meeting is to “identify strategies to make agriculture more competitive in the region and help to satisfy the hunger of millions of people”. (AP) (30/4/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:14; Parole:125)
