AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - MORE THAN 12.885 CASES OF DENGUE IN CENTRAL AMERICA, ALMOST THREE THOUSAND IN EL SALVADOR SINCE JANUARY THIS YEAR

Wednesday, 5 November 2003

Roma (Fides Service) – Since January this year the Health Ministry of El Salvador HAS registered 2.534 cases of ordinary Dengue fever and 108 cases of the haemorrhaging type which has already killed six children. To prevent another nation-wide epidemic the government issued a warning that Dengue carrying mosquito larvae were on the increase and a house to house prevention campaign was started. In 2002 El Salvador was struck by an epidemic with 4.410 confirmed cases of ordinary Dengue, 370 of the haemorrhaging type and the death of ten people. The only positive note this year is that present weather conditions in El Salvador are helping to reduce the larvae and consequently to limit in the number of persons affected by the haemorrhaging type which can be fatal.
