WHO/USA - GUARANTEE EFFICIENT HEALTH SERVICE FOR THE POOR, INCREASE INVESTMENTS IN HEALTH SECTOR, GRADUAL ELIMINATION OF FINANCIAL RESTRICTIONS

Saturday, 25 October 2003

Rome (Fides Service) – Health is an intrinsic right of every human person as well as a central factor in the reduction of poverty and the promotion of social-economic development. There are many interventions to control the main diseases but money for the health sector is lacking and a series of restrictions prevent any global or national measures to expand health services to the poor. The high number of people suffering from preventable diseases in poor countries and communities calls for strategic plans for health investments to improve the life of poor people and promote their development. To meet this urgent need a process of macro economy and health-care to put health care at the centre of developing countries’ agendas has started. Ministries of finance, planning and health with development agencies and other organisations are working to improve the quality of social services. WHO, working closely with governments and their partners, offer technical expertise to support countries efforts for developing multi-sector long term investment projects aimed to guarantee efficient health services for the poor, increased investments in health sector and gradual elimination of financial restrictions.
