ASIA/KOREA - The Church in Korea relies on Basic Ecclesial Communities for authentic evangelisation

Thursday, 5 July 2007

Daejeon (Agenzia Fides) - Two meetings on Basic Ecclesial Communities were organised by the Catholic National Conference for Basic Ecclesial Communities BECs 22 and 27 June at S. J. Hasang Formation Centre in the diocese of Daejeon, on the theme “ And as there is one loaf, so we, although there are many of us, are one single body, for we all share in the one loaf” (1Cor 10,17). About 300 representatives of 15 dioceses listened to conferences on Basic Ecclesial Communities and relative BEC programmes.
Once of the conferences “Deeper knowledge of BECs and courses of preparation”, given by Rev Augustine Seo Chun-bae, of Guri parish in the diocese of Uijeongbu, treated four introductory elements: the joy experienced by a Catholic who encounters a BEC for the first time; doubts when this feeling wanes; recognition of BECs; development of behaviour.
Rev Seo said the BEC is a modus vivendi of the Church for authentic evangelisation and for the People of God to prepare to see the Kingdom of God. He said that BECs courses would help the faithful deepen and enhance their identity, focussing on spiritual growth so the faith is ready to face interior conflict and to strengthen the spiritual dimension of life.
Another conference “Movement and Practice of BECs”, by Paul Ryu Seung-gi treated of the experience in the parish of St. Paul Jeong Hasang, in the archdiocese of iDaegu, with regard to the BECs methods of encounter. He said that the BEC is fundamental for those who tend to pursue material wealth and overlook the spiritual aspects of life.
The meetings were also an opportunity for the participants to experience different BEC programmes and methods used for courses most suitable at the level of dioceses, deaneries and parishes. It also emerged that the spirit and the teaching of Vatican II can be put into practice with real involvement in the BECs. (K.P.) (Agenzia Fides 5/7/2007; righe 27, parole 349)
