Sao Paulo (Agenzia Fides) - According to the health ministry of Brazil, every year 1.104 million women have an abortion: one out of every four babies conceived is denied the right to life and is aborted.
A report issued by the Rio de Janeiro Federal University says that 1, 400,000 illegal abortions are performed every year. Health ministry records show that over the past five years 1.2 million women were admitted to public hospitals with complications (230,523 in 2006) due to illegal abortion.
At the moment in Brazil abortion is only legal in the case of rape, danger for the health of the mother or brain damage for the child, but legislators are trying to extend it to allow abortion in every case of pregnancy.
Pope Benedict XVI, in Brazil last month, reaffirmed the Catholic Church's position to defend the life of the unborn child. (AP) (26/6/2007 Agenzia Fides; Righe:15; Parole:162)
