Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - The local Church in Santo Domingo has suggested that as a rapid solution to the problem of costly medicines inaccessible to the poorest citizens the government could open more 'peoples pharmacies.
An article in the weekly Catholic publication, “Camino”, says the question is one of 'life or death' and tells of the “sense of frustration, powerlessness and sadness" which overcomes sick people when the doctor prescribes therapy or medicines they cannot afford.
The Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic has appealed to the office for Public Health to find a solution “to offer encouragement and hope to those who face this dilemma”.
“Camino” laments the fact that drugs indispensable for treating certain diseases are sold at prices which poor Dominicans just cannot afford.
