AFRICA/GHANA - The Pope creates Apostolic prefecture of Donkorkrom and appoints first Apostolic Prefect

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on 12 June 2007 created the Apostolic Prefecture of Donkorkrom (Ghana), with territory taken from the diocese of Koforidua. The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI appointed Rev. Father Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, S.V.D., Superior Provincial of the Divine Word Missionaries in Ghana and president of the Ghana Conference of Religious Major Superiors, first Apostolic Prefect of Donkorkrom (Ghana)
Rev. Fr. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, S.V.D., was born in Accra on 24 March 1956. He was ordained a priest on 14 July 1985. Until now he was Superior Provincial of the Divine Word Missionaries in Ghana and president of the Ghana Conference of Religious Major Superiors.
Statistics: the territory of the new Apostolic Prefecture of Donkorkrom (Latin name Donkorkromen/sis/), includes the civil district of Donkorkrom, situated in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It has an area of 4,285sq km and a population of 136,000 including 12,000 Catholics (8,8%), gathered in 3 parishes served by 7 SVD missionaries, 6 Sisters (SspS) and 102 catechists. (S.L.)
