Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Mexico has issued a statement "The dignity of human life and justice" calling on the Supreme Court of Mexico to act with impartiality and according to the law with regard to requests for recent legislation which de-penalised abortion to be declared unconstitutional.
The Bishops write "the basis of every just law is the inalienable dignity of the human person", a dignity recognised by reason and which demands "respect not abuse since the person must be treated as an end not a means". They recall that human life "is not simply a biochemical phenomenon, it is a path of spiritual perfection open and tending to a transcendent destiny". It should therefore be respected irrespective of any religious or philosophical concept.
The Catholic Bishops praise the many efforts being made on the part of various instances to press "the Supreme Court of justice to examine with care the recent law which de-penalises abortion", recalling that for various reasons this law is unconstitutional. "We sincerely trust- the Bishops affirm - that the people called to examine and assess this legislation will do so with impartiality and a strong sense of law ".
