EUROPE/ITALY - SAVE THE CHILDREN WELCOMES DEVELOPED COUNTRIES’ DECISION FOR GLOBAL FUND TO FIGHT AIDS, TB AND MALARIA

Monday, 20 October 2003

Rome (Fides Service) – More than 14 million children under 15 in the world have lost one or two parents because of AIDS. At present only 3% of the Global Fund goes to support this category. Half of the amount is spent on medicines, only 15% is assigned for developing infrastructures. At last there is a move to offer more concrete help to countries most affected by the AIDS emergency, Burundi, Rwanda and Liberia.
Save the Children humanitarian organisation has asked the Global Fund to reinforce its mechanisms of co-ordination so as to allow developed countries to propose integrated solutions instead of separate projects for each disease. The Organisation also asked for attention for the needs of minors, especially AIDS orphans. Save the Children research shows that the diffusion of AIDS, TB and malaria can be halted simply by improving the function of health structures and co-ordinating research and methods of treating the three diseases. Excellent in this respect are projects realised by the Global Fund in Honduras and in Afghanistan.
