AMERICA/ECUADOR - “Building the dignity of all men and women ”: inspired by the Gospel and the Church's Social Doctrine Social Week seeks solutions to country's principal problems

Wednesday, 23 May 2007

Quito (Agenzia Fides) - Building the dignity of all men and women is the theme of Social Week being held from 21 to 24 May at the Catholic University of Ecuador. The event, organised by the Bishops' Social Pastoral Commission and Caritas, has brought together some 200 delegates from all over the country to reflect, in the light of Catholic Social Doctrine, on themes connected with democracy, politics and economy in Ecuador.
The goal of the Social Week is to start a process of meetings for people with experience in pastoral work, politics, social and cultural work to reflect on central aspects of national problems to find alternative solutions and to draw inspiration from the Gospel and the Church's Social Doctrine for assuming commitments in daily life.
A permanent concern of the Catholic Church in Ecuador is to find solutions for a situation of impoverishment, social fracture and deterioration of politics. The Catholic community continues to promote reflection to discern guidelines from the Church's Social Doctrine to meet the main needs of society. The Social Week is an event of dialogue and lived faith in the framework of the national situation. On this occasion the chosen themes aim to study the basic principles of human dignity and the intrinsic value of every person, regardless of race, culture or socio-economic condition.
Before this national meeting Social Week was prepared in every diocese with meetings and assemblies in parishes, diocesan lay councils and Church Movements. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 23/5/2007 righe 25 parole 251)
