EUROPE/ITALY - Camillian Fathers elect new Superior General: Fr. Renato Salvatore, former Vicar general, for the next six years

Ariccia (Fides Service) - The 56th General Chapter of the Ministers of the Infirm (Camillian Fathers) gathered in plenary assembly at the Casa Divin Maestro di Ariccia (see Fides 7/5/2007 and 10/5/2007), elected a new Superior General Fr. Renato Salvatore, according to a statement sent to Fides. Fr. Renato Salvatore, former Vicar general of the Order 2001-2007, was born 15 May 1955 in Abruzzo like the Founder of the Order, Saint Camillo.
The new Superior, who succeeds Fr. Frank Monks, did his novitiate in Bucchianico (1971-72), and after making his perpetual profession (1981), was ordained a priest on 15 July 1983. He completed his theological studies at the University of Saint Thomas in Rome obtaining a doctorate in moral theology. He has a degree in nursing. Fr. Renato has ministered in various fields: chaplain, head of the Formation House for the province of Rome and for many years parish priest at the Basilica of San Camillo in Rome, he has taught at the Camillianum, at the Lateran University and in schools for nursing and physiotherapy. For a few years he was representative of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care to the World Health Organisation in Geneva. He has published various works alone and with other authors.
The General Chapter will continue until 19 May with the election of a Vicar general and members of the central council and the drafting of guidelines for all Camillian communities for the next six years. Participants at the 56th General Chapter of the Ministers of the Infirm include 59 chapter members from 35 different countries all over the world where the Order is present with its centres for healthcare and social assistance.
