Monday, 7 May 2007

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On Tuesday 8 May there will be the presentation of the first four books in the series of Science, Theology and the Ontological Quest, STOQ. The first of a long series the books treat mathematical methods used in physics, historical-critical review of definitions of the living and organism, the acts of the 1st workshop held at the Gregorian University on relationships between science and philosophy and different contributions on the concept of life and the problem of organisms.
The details will be illustrated at a press conference at the new offices of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Via della Conciliazione 5, presided by Cardinal Paul Poupard, president of the Pontifical Councils respectively for Culture and Interreligious Dialogue.
Sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation and other sponsors STOQ is one of the most prestigious research programmes in the world on the relation between science, philosophy and theology. Co-ordinated by the Pontifical Council for Culture, this third stage involves the following pontifical universities in Rome, Lateran, Gregorian and Regina Apostolorum, Salesian, Santa Croce and Saint Thomas Angelicum.
The Quest, a vast cultural initiative, is a fruit of the new spirit of dialogue between natural sciences and theology, a spirit inaugurated by Vatican II and matured by the Study Commission on the Galilei Case, instituted by Pope John Paul II and presided by Cardinal Paul Poupard which led to the celebration for the first time in history of the Jubilee for Scientists on 25 May during the Great Jubilee Year of 2000.
Present with Cardinal Poupard at the press conference Pietro Ramellini, Professor in Scienza and Faith at Regina Apostolorum; Gennaro Auletta, STOQ Scientific director and Professor at the Gregorian; Mons. Melchor Sanchez de Toca, STOQ director and under-secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture. (AP) (7/5/2007 Agenzia Fides; Righe:29; Parole:332)
