OCEANIA/ SOLOMON ISLANDS - Education to Life Seminar for young people and families

Thursday, 26 April 2007

Honiara (Fides Service) - Recently young people and families in Honiara were invited to take part in an Education to Life Seminar organised by the Honiara Diocesan Association for Life and the Family. Besides many young people and married couples, a good nummber religious men and women involved in youth and family pastoral also took part.
The seminar treated subjects such as human sexuality, man-woman relationships, relational dynamics in the married couple and the family from the Christian point of view centred on full respect for the inalienable dignity of the person. The lecturers underlined that the complete gift of self to another person is a prerogative proper to marriage in which husband and wife give themselves to each other and are open to life, they thus become collaborators with God, the Creator and Giver of all Life.
Fundamentally important was a lecture on how to prevent AIDS, now a growing problem also in Pacific Ocean countries particularly among young people. The participants were told that the best means of prevention is a regular life style with healthy principles and avoidance of alcohol, drug abuse and extramarital sex.
Among the lecturers Sr Bernadette Duffy from South Africa with years of experience in the field. Her input came from a culture very different to that of the Pacific which made it particularly interesting and led to enthusiastic discussion. The participants, who came from the dioceses of Gizo, Auki as well as Honiara, said they found the Seminar “very important for day to day living ” and that they were determined to share the knowledge and information gained with the people of their own parishes and church groups.
