VATICAN - International study-seminar on the question “Climate Change and Development” 26 and 27 April, organised by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace

Tuesday, 24 April 2007

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - Great concern was aroused in world public opinion after the ecological alarm sounded recently by the UN Security Council on the basis of a Report issued by environment experts. What is the connection between climate change and development, what is the economic, social, and energy impact of these changes and what are the ensuing responsibilities at various national and international levels? These are the questions which an international study-seminar promoted in the Vatican by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace 26 and 27 April will strive to answer with input from experts in the scientific, economic, political and pastoral fields.
The seminar will have four sessions, starting from an in-depth presentation of the situations and causes of climate change today. To follow, on the first day of the Seminar, a specific session on: “Climate Change and Development”. On 27 April work will focus on: “Climate Change and Political Responsibility”, in the morning and the last session in the afternoon on: “Climate Change and Development”. On 27 April work in the morning will focus on: “Climate Change and Pastoral Duty”. The Seminar, to be opened and concluded by the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace Cardinal Renato Martino, will not be open to the public. (S.L.)
