Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - Peter denies the Lord for the second time. Peter withdraws to the outer courtyard and here too he is recognised: “He is one of them” (Mark 14, 69). Peter denies it.
Another servant girls says: “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene” (Mt 26, 71). Peter says: “I do not know the man” (Mt 26, 72).
Later “another”, guard, one who had seen Peter questioned in the inner courtyard the first time said: “You are one of them” (Lk 22, 58). Peter can only say: “I am not My friend” (Lk 22, 58)
About an hour later another man insisted, saying, 'This fellow was certainly with him. Why, he is a Galilean.'Peter said, 'My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.' But his reply does not silence those present. Someone else asks Peter: “Aren’t you one of his disciples?” (Jn 18, 25). Peter must answer and he says again: “I am not” (Jn 18, 25).
This time the attack in harsher and longer. The response seems convincing: for 2nd time Peter denies that he knows Jesus. Peter is safe... (to be Continued) (J.M.) (Agenzia Fides 2/4/2007, righe 19, parole 289)
