AFRICA/GHANA - First meeting of new Standing Committee of the Symposium of Bishops’ Conferences of Africa and Madagascar SECAM

Accra (Fides Service)- A meeting of the new Standing Committee of the Symposium of Bishops’ Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) will begin today in Accra, Ghana to conclude on March 30, 2007. It will be the first meeting of the Committee since it was elected at the last Plenary Assembly of SECAM that took place in Dar-Es- Salaam, Tanzania last January.
The meeting will discuss a report on the Congress on Evangelisation and matters relating to the last Plenary Assembly of the Association; a seminar planned by SECAM in collaboration with the European Bishops’ Conferences to mark the 200th Anniversary of the End of Slavery in Africa. The Seminar will be held in Cape Coast, Ghana from November 13-18, 2007.
Other issues to be considered by the Committee include a letter on the Protocol to the African Charter on Human Rights & Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa; a proposal from the Aid -to-Church in Need on the issues relating to the Role of the Women and Children in the Church in Africa; and Good Governance.
