AFRICA/ALGERIA - From Lyons to Algiers under the banner of inter-religious dialogue

Algiers (Fides Service)- Cardinal Philippe Barbarin Archbishop of Lyons and Azzedine GACI the president of the Regional Council for the Muslim Cult CRCM of the French region of Rhône-Alpes, will make a five day visit to Algeria 17 to 21 February to promote Christian-Muslim dialogue.
The initiative, launched by the CRCM President in March last year during a meeting between representatives of the CRCM and regional Christian-Muslim dialogue delegates, received full support from Cardinal Barbarin who immediately asked to take part.
A statement from the archdiocese of Lyons explained the purpose of the initiative: “The journey will highlight the bond which exists between the regions of Lyons and Algeria and offer local Christians and Muslims committed to intensifying reciprocal knowledge an opportunity to give common witness”. The delegates will meet prominent members of the Catholic and Muslim communities in Annaba, Hippona, Constantine, Algiers, Tibhirine and Médéa.
The Algerian minister for religious affairs is sponsoring the initiative in the context of the inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue encouraged by the President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 13/2/2007 righe 21 parole 204)
