EUROPE/ITALY - Diocese of Rome commemorates Rev Andrea Santoro fidei donum missionary priest martyred in Trabzon Turkey, a year ago: Cardinal Ruini and some of the priest’s family members visit Trabzon

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - Various initiatives are being organised in the Rome diocese to mark the first anniversary of the murder of a Roman fidei donum priest Fr Andrea Santoro on 5 February 2006 as he prayed after Mass in Sancta Maria church, Kilisesi (see Fides 6/2/2006; 7/2/2006; 8/2/2006; 9/2/2006; 10/2/2006). The programme includes a Mass on Sunday 4 February at the Roman parish of the Transfiguration (where Rev Santoro was assistant priest in the early 1970s), presided by Card. Roger Etchegaray, followed by the inauguration of a Room named after Rev Andrea. A prayer vigil presided by Archbishop Angelo Comastri, the Pope’s Vicar general for Vatican City, beginning at 8.45, at the parish church of Fabiano and Venanzio where Fr Andrea was parish priest before departing for mission in Turkey. The Jesus of Nazareth parish, where he was parish priest will commemorate Rev. Andrea with a 6.30pm Mass on Monday 5 February presided by Bishop Enzo Dieci auxiliary bishop of Rome and delegate for Missionary Cooperation among Churches. On Monday 5 February, in the chapel of the Pontifical Roman Seminary where Rev. Andrea was a student. there will be 7pm Mass presided by vice regent of Rome diocese Bishop Luigi Moretti.
On Monday 5 in Turkey, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Pope’s vicar for Rome diocese, will celebrate the Eucharist in the parish church at Trabzon for the eternal repose of the priest’s soul and express the sympathy of the diocese of Rome to the local Catholic community. The Cardinal will be accompanied by Bishop Mauro Parmeggiani, the mother and two sisters and an uncle of Rev. Andrea and the parish priest of S. Ippolito Rev. Enrico Feroci.(S.L.)
