AMERICA/PANAMA - Reforms of Penal Code “must be based on respect for the right to life in all its stages” says Catholic Archbishop in a letter to be read in all churches on Sunday

Panama (Agenzia Fides) - In view of a National Assembly discussion on a proposed Bill to modify Panama’s Penal Code, the Archbishop José Dimas Cedeño Delgado of Panama has written a letter on the matter be read in every church at Sunday Mass on 4 February. The letter is addressed to parish priests, other priests, deacons, religious and lay Catholics.
"We are aware of the necessity to change and improve the Penal Code norms" the Archbishop writes. But the changes “must respect the right to life in all its stages from conception to natural death". Therefore the Archbishop encourages Catholics to be in front of the National Assembly on Monday morning, February 5 at 10.30 “to accompany the members of parliament and urge them to defend the greatest good: human life”. The Archbishop informs the people that pro-life institutions and organisations have formed the Panama Pro-Life Alliance. "Let us ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten and guide the ‘Fathers of our Homeland’ that they may do justice to their investiture and legislate in order to protect out most precious good: human life" the letter concludes.
