AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Plenary assembly of bishops 5-9 February: “The Church’s Missionary Activity” to foster greater commitment for mission ad gentes

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - “The Church’s Missionary Activity” will be the theme of the next plenary assembly of the Colombian Bishops 5 - 9 February in Bogota in order to “reflect on the Church’s missionary dimension and foster greater commitment to mission ad gentes, ad intra e ad extra, in harmony with the missionary potential of our Church in Colombia”, we read in a statement sent to Fides by the Colombian Bishops Commission for Missions. Participants will include 87 bishops representing Colombia’s 76 ecclesiastic jurisdictions.
The four main addresses will focus on the following topics: “The Mission of the early Christian communities” (Fr Gustavo Baena Bustamante SJ); "Evolution of the Theology of Mission" (Bishop Vittorino Girardi of Tilarán, Costa Rica): "Mission Ad Gentes, challenges and needs in the universal Church and the world today" (Archbishop Luis Augusto Castro Quiroga of Tunja, president of the Bishops’ Conference); "Missionary fields in Colombia today" (Fr Francisco Ceballos Escobar, Provincial Superior of the Redemptorist Missionaries). Group discussion with focus on: Mission and Prophecy; Witness and Holiness; the Consecrated Life; New Evangelisation; Missionary dimension of pastoral care; Mission as proclamation and the Media; Ecumenism; Mission and Politics; Missionary Laity; Missionary priests.
Before the assembly the Bishops will attend a three day session on peace building and reconciliation to inform the bishops of the present situation in Colombia and identify ways for the Church to promote national reconciliation.
