Tuesday, 7 October 2003

Rome (Fides Service) – On Sunday 19 October Hong Kong diocese will mark Catholic World Mission Day 2003 with a major event of prayer and evangelisation in the city sports centre.
The occasion will also mark the start of a Year of Evangelisation proclaimed for Hong Kong diocese. Mgr Dominic Chan, president of the preparatory committee said the theme of the day will be “The Feast of the Year of the Rosary”. Everything will focus on the rosary, even the sports stadium decoration will include a large rosary with the large cross bearing the image of the Risen Lord.
More than 20,000 Catholics are expected to gather for the recitation of the rosary with meditation on all four cycles of mysteries, joyful, sorrowful, glorious and luminous in Cantonese and English alternately. The prayers will be offered for various intentions including world peace, the intentions of the Pope and also the well being of all the 7 million people of Hong Kong.
Prayers will be followed by a show of song and music during which thousands of young people will perform formation dancing prepared with months of practice.
Keeping in mind that in Rome on the same day, 19 October, the Pope will preside Mass for the beatification of Mother Teresa, the organising committee has prepared special prayers to help the faithful be in communion with the universal Church.
Mgr Chan has urged Catholics in Hong Kong to heed the Holy Father’s call to return to the prayer of the rosary which is pure contemplation with the Blessed Virgin Mary on the life of Christ, and to do this especially during October the month of the rosary and the month of mission.
